He could conceivably be called the King of the Saint Lucian
Road. With six Road March titles – four in a row from 2006 to 2009 – Ricky T
has made a business of capturing what moves revelers on the road. Maybe its
because he too is a reveler or because it was the first title he ever won but
every Carnival season, Ricky T pays homage to that which made him – the Saint
Lucian Road.
“De Pavement” off the Dutch Productions/Stratosphere Muzic
Bacchanal Overdrive Riddim takes that which he has done to the stratosphere,
moving you on the road at the same time redefining what you know about a ‘road
song’. “We not coming here just to jump and wave/We want to get on bad/We not
coming here to mash up nothing/ We want to get on bad/We not coming here to
trouble nobody/We want to free up ourselves.”
Released for Saint Lucia Carnival 2014, “De Pavement” is
written by award winning songwriter and producer Courtney “Curty” Louis and
Saveion Georges; Yannick “Fresh Prince” Plante provides additional keys.
This song is so rich with imagery and sentiment that you can
practically see revelers decked out in feathers and sequins, spider panties and
sparkly things.
“We Carnival nice/We Carnival sweet/We Carnival ready/We
Carnival bad” sings Ricky T while reminding all “the road is calling”.
“Wake up this morning/I feeling nice/I caan wait to get on
the road and socialize/we coolers ready with rum and ice/I caan deny this is
paradise.”
Indeed it is.
