Company” with Ricky T featuring Shurwayne Winchester was borne out of a studio
vibe. Singers, producers, arrangers – people who are part of the circus life
that is music will attest that is often where the best music comes from and
here is no different. Combining the regional talents of Saint Lucian Soca
dynamo Ricky T with his equally accomplished Trinidad and Tobago counterpart
Shurwayne Winchester, “Bad Company” was written by the artistes and produced by
Courtney “Curty” Louis & Horace Darrell with additional keys by Yannick
Plante .
From the
opening strains, “Bad Company” will have you looking for a flag and moving your
waist as the artistes remind you their purpose is to spread love as much as
bacchanal. To be clear, this is a mission they take very seriously, “because we
make people jump like they mad/because on the road we like bacchanal/we jump on
the stage and we get in a rage/we don’t care if we make front page.”

had his fair share of success in Trinidad and the region as has Shurwayne
Winchester. Their collaboration therefore is meant for all soca lovers,

“Don’t Let Go (I Am Soca)
by Ricky T starts off slow and builds and builds and builds just like the
spirit of bacchanal for which it sings a love song. For all that he has two
Groovy Soca Monarch titles, Ricky T is known more for power anthems that drive
fetes, concerts and the road.
But with “Don’t Let Go (I
Am Soca)” he proves as he did with “Indian Girl” (2011) and “40 Days 40 Nights
(Dingolay)” (2013) that he can slow it down with as devastating an impact as
any power number.

it”. You heard the 2013 Groovy and Power Soca Monarch as well as Road March
King of Saint Lucia. “We coming to fete / to make the place shake / we doh give
a damn at all / come to make you sweat ” is a promise Ricky T knows he can and
will deliver on “De Truth” off the Dutch Productions/Stratosphere Muzic, Black
Assassin Riddim for Saint Lucia Carnival 2014.
This is not just any power
soca song. “De Truth” is a retrospective of Ricky T’s career so far spanning
his hit songs from “Pressure Boom” (2007) to 2014’s “Mass Attack”. Along the
way he has dominated Saint Lucian Carnival streets, fetes and events as well as
toured the region and the world including performing at Madison Square Garden
and the Barclays Centre in New York.
While not one to look
back, Ricky T nevertheless brings “De Truth” for his fans, giving them a chance
to remember and celebrate with him, “we coming / we prepared / we doh fraid /
never scared / like lightning / we striking / I’m the Lord of the Ring.” So take
this one as a look back but also a promise for the future.

female soca artiste equally versed in delivering groovy and power soca anthems.
Her energy, vocals, raw talent and stage presence also bodes well for this
budding soca artiste who already has the Piton Soca Starz title to her name.
“Overdrive” is her first power soca offering for Saint Lucia
Carnival 2014. The song is featured on the Dutch Productions/Stratosphere Muzic
Bacchanal Overdrive Riddim and is written by Courtney Louis and Saveion
Georges. Produced by Louis with additional keys from Yannick “Fresh Prince”
Plante, “Overdrive” is the second single from Sergie this year.
On “Overdrive”, Sergie combines her budding prowess with
that of the Queen of the Jungle, Nicole “Nicki” David – Saint Lucia’s lone
Female Road March Queen. The two Stratosphere Muzic label females will make you
“listen cuz it’s time to press gas.”
An ode to the road, “Overdrive” tells a reveler to “reverse
and find a parking spot” while in bacchanal drive, “I feel it in me feet/that
feeling is so sweet/I out here masquerading put the soca on repeat/I come to
play a mas/cuz on the road I am the boss.”

Kakal - He or She [Bacchanal Overdrive Riddim]
In the intro to his 2008 hit song “Party Mashupers” –
two-time Power Soca Monarch Kakal boldly declared “for Carnival you need people
like Kakal.” It stands to reason therefore that he would take on what has
become a major question during Lucian Carnival, especially during J’Ouvert and
Dennery Carnival where cross dressing is as much a part of the activity as soca
music, leading to the question – do you ever really know whom you’re taking a
grind on?
“He or She” is a request therefore for your “Sex ID” as
Kakal asks “show me your gender/if you have no agenda”. Written by Calixte
Xavier and award winning songwriter Courtney Louis, “He or She” is featured on
the Dutch Productions/Stratosphere Muzic Bacchanal Overdrive Riddim released
for Saint Lucia Carnival 2014. The song is produced, mixed and mastered by
Louis.
Kakal can always be counted on to inject a unique flavor
to our ‘mas whether its in his energetic performances which include some never
seen gyrations or a song like “He or She” that only he could deliver.
So tell me, are you ready to “show yourself before you
come whine on me” because, I really must know, are you a “He or a She”.
